How Brightstar's internal audit team built continuous auditing on SAP data with KNIME and the DVW Connector for SAP

Brightstar (formerly IGT) is a global lottery operator and technology provider, working in highly regulated markets worldwide. Its internal audit team set out to move from manual, one-off analysis to continuous auditing across the business.
The challenge
Audit work depended on manual processes in Excel that were hard to reproduce and put data integrity at risk. Legacy audit tooling was slow and awkward. Above all, there was no continuous data pipeline connecting the team's sources, and SAP held much of the data that mattered. Without an integrated pipeline, continuous auditing was not possible.
The solution
The team standardized on KNIME, using KNIME Analytics Platform to build workflows and KNIME Business Hub to schedule, version, and collaborate on them. They read SAP data directly into KNIME with the DVW SAP connectors for both KNIME Analytics Platform and KNIME Business Hub, querying more than eleven million records from SAP tables in a single workflow.
With SAP and their other sources joined in one place, the team ran anomaly detection, including Benford's law analysis, and wrote results out to Tableau and local backups. Because each workflow is reproducible and self-documenting, it doubles as the audit procedure itself, which holds up under external audit.
The outcome
Continuous auditing is now running on scheduled, reproducible pipelines. The most painful legacy use case runs about 85% faster, the team takes on four times as many audit projects a year, and external audits go more smoothly thanks to the transparency and documentation built into every workflow.
"One of the big requirements in internal audit is to have reproducible work, so we can actually audit our own audits." Brightstar internal audit team, as featured in KNIME's customer story
